Samsung showcased foldable mobile prototypes to investors

Samsung’s Analyst Day in South Korea wasn’t only about the presentation from key Samsung executives. In fact, a report by Wall Street Journal claims, investors got a glimpse of the future at the closed door conference where reporters were banned from attending it and the investors, prohibited from taking any photographs.

The conference showcased some concept versions of foldable mobile phones with one analyst describing couple of devices on showcase.

Samsung extends patent licensing agreement with Nokia for five years

Android might be free, but when a manufacturer wants to make an Android phone, it has to pay the price of a few patents that companies like Microsoft and Nokia have held for a few years; when you don’t pay that price officially, you get sued into oblivion by the likes of Apple and so many others. However, Nokia is one company that won’t be suing Samsung any time soon, as the two companies have renewed their patent license agreement for five years.

Samsung and LG take the competition to China

Samsung and LG have always been competing against each other in their home country, South Korea, and the fact that both companies released a smartphone with a curved display around the same time shows the extent of that competition. Now, the competition is reportedly heading to China for both companies, as each looks to court consumers in the country with the launch of its first LTE mobile networks.

Apple, Microsoft-owned Rockstar Consortium sues Samsung and other Android manufacturers

The patent wars shall never end it seems. Reuters reports that the Rockstar Consortium, an organization formed to negotiate licensing for patents acquired from bankrupt Nortel and jointly owned by Apple, Microsoft, BlackBerry, Ericsson, Sony and EMC Corporation, has sued Samsung, Google, and other Android companies for infringing some of the Nortel patents that the consortium bought back in 2011.

Samsung adds more partners to its Wallet service, availability still limited

Samsung has announced that it has added support for multiple new services from various partners in its Wallet app (which lets users store and manage tickets, coupons, boarding passes, and membership cards, but doesn’t let them make payments like services like Google Wallet). New partners include American Express, United Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, Malaysia Airlines, Amtrak, Valpak, eGifter, Gyft, Yowza, SpotOn, Agoda, HRS, Opodo and Thrillcall.

Samsung powers Sprint’s TD-LTE network in the US

Samsung ready to mass produce curved batteries

The Galaxy Note 3 comes with a 3,200mAh battery. The Galaxy Round, which has exactly the same specs as the Note 3 except for the lack of stylus support, comes with a 2,800mAh battery. Why? Well, because while the Galaxy Round is curved, its battery is flat and straight like standard batteries, only elongated so it can fit underneath the back cover. This is in stark contrast to LG – its curved smartphone, the G Flex, comes with a battery capacity of 3,500mAh, considerably more than the Round’s, thanks to the use of a curved battery.

Samsung launches new SDKs for its devices to attract developers

Samsung and NBA enter $100 million deal

In a few months, if you start seeing a lot of Samsung devices in basketball games, don’t be surprised: according to The Wall Street Journal, Samsung has entered a $100 million deal with the National Basketball Association, to “bring the South Korean company’s technology courtside” at NBA games. As part of the deal, Samsung will provide the courtside monitors that referees use to review close calls, and will get customized video content for its smartphones, tablets and televisions.

Samsung fined $340,000 for badmouthing HTC in Taiwan

Apple wants to impose sanctions on Samsung over leaked agreement

Apple and Samsung have been battling out in the court over patent infringements for couple of years now but the companies argued yesterday in the San Jose court over leaked patent licensing agreements.

The story so far is that Apple handed patent licensing agreements with Nokia, Ericsson, Sharp and Philips marked with “Attorney Eyes Only”. Samsung Becomes World's Most Profitable Handset Vendor in Q2 2013

According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics' Wireless Device Strategies (WDS) service, Samsung became the world’s most profitable handset vendor in Q2 2013. Apple slipped into second position, as margins have been hit by lackluster iPhone 5 volumes and tougher competition in China.
